Work Capability Assessment event, Tuesday 8th April

You are invited to attend two FREE events in April organised by Europia and our partners

1.   On Tuesday April 8th about Work Capability Assessments:  They aren't working 
Organised by the WCA Access Group - of which Europia is one of 8 member organisations
Other members are Breakthrough UK, Greater Manchester Coalition of Disabled People,  Manchester Alliance of Community Care,  Access to Advice,  Manchester BME Network, Greater Manchester Welfare Rights Advice Service, Anti-Poverty group, Church House (Greater Manchester)
Our event is held at London Scottish House (4th floor), 24 Mount St, Manchester, M2 3NN
12.40 - 2.00pm   Why WCAs have to change now
2.10 - 3.40pm   How we can Campaign for Change Together
We are pressing for an Independent Inquiry into the Impact of WCAs
Atos may be pulling out but we must ensure that the new set-up is fair and humane.
There will be Key speakers and audience participation.  No booking is required.

2.   On Saturday 12th March - an Easter event for European nationals and local people
From 12.00 - 2.00pm  - a Fun event targetted at Polish families but everyone is welcome at the Church of the Nazarene,230 Stamford St, Ashton-under-Lyne, OL6 7LN 
Free cakes and refreshments - Polish / English traditions, children's activities, crafts
It is the latest in a series of community events based on our Invisible Minority Report.
We are encouraging closer co-operation between Polish and other local residents in Ashton.

New confidential support group for carers!

Our group is developing our partnership with the Manchester Carers Centre (Carers Trust) to provide a confidential support group for carers. It will be an opportunity for carers to share their experiences in confidence with other carers of those who have a mental or physical illness. A carer can be anyone who cares for or about someone and can be a partner, sibling, family member, friend, colleague, neighbour etc. We will keep you informed about when this new service will start.

Park House relocation transport update

As readers of this blog may know, Manchester Mental Health and Social Care Trust is in the process of relocating psychiatric inpatient services from Edale House at the Central Manchester Hospital (MRI) site to Park House at North Manchester General Hospital. We've always been concerned about the impact that this move will have on carers and service users in terms of increased transport times. A representative from the Trust came to our meeting last month to update us on plans for transport and the Trust's latest newsletter contains the following update on the service user and carer transport sub-group: "The group last met on 6 February and it was decided that another visitor questionnaire should be undertaken to make sure that we make the right  decisions about transport.  It was also agreed that more engagement and       communication with service users is necessary and  the service users and carers who attend the meetings will support this....

Radio star

This Friday at 11am our Group Chair, Lindsey Cree, is being interviewed on BBC Radio M/c, 95.1 FM by Heather Stott. Lindsey will be talking about carers of those with a mental illness. Do tune in if you can. Good luck Lindsey we know you'll be great!
