Plans for the Future of Mental Health Services in Manchester

Mental Health and Wellbeing services are provided by Manchester City Council and the NHS. The Council fund Health & Wellbeing Services and the NHS fund Mental Health Specialist Services. NHS Manchester and Manchester City Council Commissioners are working in partnership to improve the whole system in a project called the Mental Health Improvement Programme. The Consultation is in two parts – Health and Wellbeing to provide services for everyone, which must have clear links through every pathway with Mental Health Specialist Services that relate to the treatment of people with mental illness.

The Health and Wellbeing Services proposed model is:
  • One-to-one support to navigate through the network and link into specialist services for those who need it.
  • Training for providers and the public around wellbeing and recovery
  • Provide support for the development of peer support groups and networks
  • Self help promotion
  • An innovation fund for groups with new ideas to access.
The Mental Health Specialist Services proposed model is:
  • Non-psychotic illness pathways
  • Psychotic illness pathways
  • Specialist liaison service pathways
  • Wellbeing and prevention
  • Organic pathways (Dementia)
The pathways also include: NHS Specialist treatment services, Medication, Counselling, One to one support groups, Drop ins, Advice and support, Opportunities for meaningful activity, Strong communities

The plans are online now so that residents, service users, carers and other stakeholders can give their views as part of our engagement process. The details are available now by logging on to www.manchester.nhs.uk/talkinghealth and going to the Talking Mental Health section. Each pathway is available as a summary with the complete document available to download from the relevant page.

Park House relocation transport update

As readers of this blog may know, Manchester Mental Health and Social Care Trust is in the process of relocating psychiatric inpatient services from Edale House at the Central Manchester Hospital (MRI) site to Park House at North Manchester General Hospital. We've always been concerned about the impact that this move will have on carers and service users in terms of increased transport times. A representative from the Trust came to our meeting last month to update us on plans for transport and the Trust's latest newsletter contains the following update on the service user and carer transport sub-group: "The group last met on 6 February and it was decided that another visitor questionnaire should be undertaken to make sure that we make the right  decisions about transport.  It was also agreed that more engagement and       communication with service users is necessary and  the service users and carers who attend the meetings will support this....
